Which Steel Grade Should You Order?

Log saw blade life on a tissue line is decided by how the steel behaves under continuous CBN honing, not by hardness alone. The two grades below cover almost every tissue and towel application we quote.

GradeHardnessBest ForTrade-off
D2 / 1.2379HRC 58–60Standard bath tissue and kitchen towel lines running in-line CBN sharpening. Our default grade.Highest all-round value. Not the longest life on heavily recycled, high-ash furnish.
Cr12MoVHRC 58–60Lines where blade cost per cut matters more than absolute edge life; widely available regrind support.Slightly lower wear resistance than D2 on abrasive recycled fibre.

For high-speed lines running heavily recycled fibre with abrasive filler, we also quote M2 HSS, which holds the edge longest between grinds but is more sensitive to CBN wheel condition. If you are not sure which grade your line needs, tell us the furnish (virgin or recycled), the log density, and how many cuts per minute you run. We match the grade to the line, not the other way round.

Engineering Advantages

The tissue log cross-cut is the single highest-stakes cutting operation in a tissue converting line. A dimensional defect at this stage—crushed cardboard cores, excessive dust generation, or angled cut faces—propagates immediately into the packaging stations, triggering line stops and consumer-grade rejections.

01 — PRECISION

Zero-Wobble Tensioning

Why does a log saw crush cardboard cores? Almost always because lateral runout has drifted past about 0.20 mm, and the blade starts beating the core instead of slicing it. A 610 mm blade spinning at high RPM will warp if not properly tensioned. We CNC-tension and micro-grind every log saw blade to ≤0.15 mm lateral runout, ensuring it cuts perfectly straight without oscillating and crushing the fragile cardboard core.

02 — METALLURGY

In-Line CBN Sharpening Ready

D2 and Cr12MoV blades heat-treated to HRC 58–60. This specific hardness range responds cleanly to continuous CBN grinding wheels without loading or glazing them, maintaining a razor edge and protecting your sharpening equipment.

03 — COATINGS

Teflon & Chrome Finishes

Friction generates heat and explosive paper dust. Hard Chrome or Teflon (PTFE) coated blades lower the coefficient of friction, yielding pristine cut edges on premium 3-ply kitchen towel logs and extending Mean Time Between sharpening cycles.

Product FAQs & Buying Guidance

Technical FAQs

01

Why is my log saw crushing the cardboard cores of the toilet rolls?

+

Core crushing is primarily caused by excessive blade wobble (lateral runout) or a dull cutting edge. When lateral runout exceeds 0.20 mm, the blade physically beats against the core rather than slicing it. Our blades are tension-leveled and CMM-verified to ≤0.15 mm lateral runout. Also verify that your in-line CBN sharpening stones are correctly aligned and actively dressing the blade on every cycle.

02

How do I minimize dust and fiber tearing during tissue cross-cutting?

+

Dust is generated when a high-friction blade tears tissue fibers instead of shearing them. We engineer a shallow bevel angle (15°–25°) combined with a mirror-polished face (Ra ≤0.2 μm). For maximum dust reduction, upgrade to our Teflon (PTFE) coated blades, which drastically lower friction and allow the blade to glide through the log with minimal fiber displacement.

03

Can you supply blades for Fabio Perini, PCMC, Casmatic, or Gambini log saws?

+

Yes. The standard Ø68.26 mm (+0.05 mm) bore fits Fabio Perini and PCMC Forte/Elite log saws directly. The Ø82.55 mm bore covers Casmatic and equivalent platforms. For Gambini and Bretting machines we build to the measured geometry of your existing blade or your own drawing, so the replacement drops in without retooling. Send us the machine model, a worn blade, or a dimensioned sketch and we confirm fitment before quoting.

04

How does the blade interact with the machine’s continuous CBN sharpening system?

+

Log saws use synchronized CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) stones to hone the blade continuously during operation. If the blade material is too hard or soft, it will load or glaze the stones, rendering them ineffective. Our D2 blades heat-treated to HRC 58–60 shed micro-chips cleanly without clogging your CBN wheels.

05

What is the longest blade diameter you can manufacture?

+

We manufacture tissue log saw blades up to Ø1200 mm for large-format industrial wiper and jumbo roll (JRT) production lines. These require our large-format vacuum heat treatment furnaces and CNC grinding equipment. Standard lead time is 10 working days from drawing sign-off.
